Today we celebrate the life of Martin Luther King Jr.; an iconic champion of civil rights and racial equality. How ironic that on this same day we are forced once again to confront the racial obscenities uttered by the white supremacist residing in the White House.
How sad is it that on this day, congressional leaders are willing to leave their dignity at the door and debase themselves in defense of this president…to publically call into question the integrity of their colleagues…to perpetrate a lie…all for the sake of personal political gain?
The President of the United States denigrated Haiti and African nations as “shitholes” and then later bragged to friends about the positive political effect his racial slur would have on his base. We know this from multiple sources both in the room at the time of the incident and to whom the president spoke in the hours and days thereafter.
The intentional politicization of racism for political gain corroborated by sycophants willing to debase themselves in order to curry favor rather than speak truth to power.
How sad that on a day we should be celebrating the struggle for racial equality we are forced to deal with the embarrassing racism and political opportunism on display at the highest levels of our government.
