PRINCIPLES VERSUS POLITICS

Alabamians head to the polls today where they will choose their representative for the United States Senate.  Rather than choosing between a Democrat and a Republican; for most Alabama voters this will be a choice between their principles and their politics.

If we take Republican Roy Moore at his word he is a racist, a bigot, a homophobe, an anti-Semite and a conspiracy theorist who believes that he is above the law.  Moore has stated publically that he believes homosexual behavior should be illegal, that transgender individuals “don’t have rights”, mixed marriages should be banned, Muslims should not be allowed to serve in congress,  9/11 was retribution from God for our sins and the last 17 constitutional amendments should be repealed.

In addition to Moore’s personal utterances there is his time as a public official during which he was kicked off the Alabama Supreme Court for ethics violations…TWICE.

And if these issues do not give voters pause, they can consider the accusations levied against Moore by 8 credible independent women.  Accusations of sexually abusing underage girls; including a child fourteen years of age.

Evangelicals carry a lot of weight in Alabama politics. Will evangelicals wear their Christianity on their sleeve as they vote for Roy Moore?  Or will they roll those sleeves up and cast their ballot for a pro-choice Democrat with an unblemished record.”

Principles versus politics.

President Trump has thrown his full support behind Roy Moore.  Republican leadership has followed suit.  The Republican National Committee is funding Moore’s campaign.  All in!  No surprise here.  Republicans threw away any false sense of bi-partisan governing years ago and replaced it with a loyalty pledge to the very rich.  What they have put in place is a congress caught up in a web of corruption that is only interested in holding onto power.

The GOP tax reform bill a case in point.  How else do you explain giving billions in tax cuts to the very rich while cutting social programs like CHIP.  Republican Senator Orin Hatch’s disingenuous claim: “we don’t have the money (for CHIP)” just another case of lying to the American people.

A Roy Moore loss be a huge punch in the gut for the GOP.  A lost senate seat in a deep red state and a middle finger to the president. Not to mention the horrific publicity for having nominated such a offensive candidate.

A Roy Moore win might be just as troublesome.  Roy  Moore would become the second most visible Republican in Washington.  A millstone hanging on the GOP like an albatross.  “GOP ELECTS PEDOPHILE!”  The Dems will ride that wave all the way through the 2018 mid-terms and beyond.

Principles versus politics.

Either way, Republicans lose.
