UNINTENDED CONSEQUENCES

I would like to take this opportunity to speak to the women who voted for Donald Trump.  Particularly those women who cast their vote not for ideological reasons but as a means to shake up a government t they felt was not working for them.

President-Elect Trump just announced that he has appointed the Chairman of the House Budget Committee, Representative Thomas Price to serve as Secretary of Health and Human Services.

Here is what Representative Price brings to the discussion of health care in America.

-Congressman Price is one of the chief proponents for repealing Obamacare.  He sponsored or supported over 60 failed legislative attempts to repeal the President’s signature piece of legislation.

-Congressman Price believes that Obamacare should be repealed and replaced with what he refers to as a “market driven program that will increase coverage and reduce cost.”  He has yet to provide specifics on how his proposed replacement plan would work.

-Congressman Price has said publically that an employer should have the right to fire any woman who uses birth control or who elects to have an abortion.

-Congressman Price has advocated for the defunding of Planned Parenthood even though the organization serves as the primary preventative health care provider for over 5 million woman.  Congressman Price has offered no solution as to where those women would go for their health care needs should he succeed in his efforts.

-Congressman Price has said that forcing insurance companies to insure people with pre-existing conditions is a “bad idea.”

-Congressman Price does not believe insurance companies should be required to allow dependent children to stay on their parents’ policies until the age of 26.

-Congressman Price believes in the privatization of Medicare.

-Congressman Price has advocated for cutting Medicare benefits, cutting middle class benefits through means-testing and raising the retirement age for receiving benefits.

-Congressman Price believes in privatizing Social Security.

Access to quality, affordable health care is an essential “quality of life” component for any modern society.  Access to quality affordable health care is particularly crucial for women in their child bearing years and the elderly.  After all…if you don’t have your health what do you have?

Congressman Thomas Price will now play a key role in determining the quality, cost and accessibility of women’s health care.
