WE THE PEOPLE

Donald Trump has ceded the moral authority to govern this country.  His unhinged efforts to grant moral equivalency to Nazis, white supremacists, and Klansmen will go down as one of the most despicable moments in the history of this country.  Donald Trump has brought shame to the office and the country.  He is a disgrace.

If you are surprised by yesterday’s events then you haven’t been paying attention.  Donald Trump rode a wave of white nationalism to the White House.  His rhetoric has offered aid and comfort to a racist ideology that has roiled in the underbelly of this country for decades.  There is nothing new here.  The President of the United States is a racist who has made it clear that he sides with supremacy over equality.

The question is what do we do about it.

This is no longer about Donald Trump.  That ship has sailed.  This is about the country.  It is about us…we the people.

It starts with our elected leaders.  Every single member of congress, regardless of party, must speak out in condemnation of the president’s remarks and CALL HIM OUT BY NAME.  To their credit Republicans Marco Rubio and Cory Gardner have already set party politics aside, followed their true moral compass and condemned this president.  Where are the others?  Where are the leaders?  Where are Paul Ryan, Mitch McConnell and the rest of the Republican caucus?  Where are the members of the president’s cabinet?  Where are they when this president is condoning Nazism?  This is not the time to be testing the temperature of your constituents.  This is not the time to test the political winds.  This is about the future country.  For once in your miserable political lives do the right thing.

But more is required than a simple statement condemning the president’s words.  Members on both sides of the isle should stand together and refuse to pass one paragraph of this president’s agenda.  Yes, we need to fix our healthcare, repair our infrastructure and reform our tax code, but these policy initiatives pale when the moral fiber of this country is under attack from the White House.  Force this president to step down…or vote him out of office.

None of this will happen if the citizens of this country remain silent.

Nazis are marching through the streets.  The president is ok with that.  David Duke has offered the president his thanks.  Our allies across the globe have expressed their horror.

What will we do to correct this wrong?  Will we act and take back the moral authority of this country?  Or will we sit back, shake our heads and do nothing?

It is up to us.

We the people.
