SANITY RETURNS TO POLITICS

We awoke this morning to the revelation that sanity may have returned to our politics.  From Maine to California voters braved long lines and inclement weather to say “NO” to Donald Trump’s divisive political discourse.

No contest was more closely scrutinized than the Virginia governor’s race. Republican candidate Ed Gillespie had adopted many of Trump’s fear mongering tactics.  Within the closing hours Gillespie had pulled to within  the margin of error of his Democratic opponent, Lieutenant Governor Ralph Horsham.   Democrats understood that a loss in this key battleground state would cement Trump’s divisive 30% strategy send a chilling message as candidates geared up for the 2018 mid-terms.

Democratic angst was misplaced as Virginia voters handed Northam a resounding 9 point win.  As the night wore on it became clear that their win in Virginia was not just a “one off” outlier.  A Democratic tsunami swept across the nation.  From the New Jersey governor’s mansion to the mayoral race in Charlotte to state assemblies from coast to coast, Democrats racked up win after win after win.

Make no mistake… Donald Trump was on the ballot.  The message delivered by the voters was clear… Donald Trump’s divisive world view was not acceptable to a vast majority of the country.

Dems should view this huge day with caution.  There is a long way to go to the 2018 mid-terms and longer still to the 2020 general.  Anything can happen.

That said we can all be forgiven for celebrating a return to political sanity…

…however brief.
