We are at war! I know that may come as a shock to the 99% of Americans who are not directly invested in our conflicts overseas; but it’s true. We are at war.
You certainly would not know it if you follow the news.
Today’s headlines are all gushing about Bill Clinton’s entrance into the 2016 presidential campaign. It seems that the former president will begin stumping for his wife in New Hampshire. Inquiring minds want to know if it is fair game to tag Hillary’s campaign with her husband’s well publicized sexual misconduct. Donald Trump believes it is…especially after Hillary labeled him a “sexist.’ My head hurts!
Our elected leaders aren’t much better.
Right before Christmas the Republican led congress announced that for the first time in six years it had passed a budget. The 1.6 trillion dollar funding bill lifts most of the sequester cuts that war hawks said emasculated our military. Now, says congress, the military will be able to procure a whole host of new toys and the president will have all the tools he needs to take the fight to ISIS. All except a congressional authorization to use the military force that they had just voted to fund.
The president has asked congress to make a formal declaration of war against ISIS. He wants to demonstrate to the world that we are united in our resolve to fight terror. And he wants to demonstrate to the kids in uniform that we have their back. Great Britain has declared war on ISIS, as have the French and the Germans. Even the Russians have gone on record. But not the Republican led Congress of the United States of America. Eighteen months of US military operations…over 15,000 airstrikes…$20 billion spent…11 US lives lost. Yet the cowards on the Hill refuse to go on record.
So I bring up the topic as a public service.
We are at war!
