STUPID PEOPLE

Donald J. Trump just tweeted this:

“Fake news reporting, a complete fabrication, that I am concerned about the meeting that my wonderful son, Donald, had in Trump Tower.  This was a meeting to get information on an opponent, totally legal and done all the time in politics – and it went nowhere.  I did not know about it!”

With this tweet President Donald J. Trump: 1.) admitted that members of his campaign conspired with the Russians to help him (Trump) win the 2016 election; 2.) admitted that he and his staff obstructed justice when they put out a false statement that the Trump Tower meeting was about adoptions; and 3.) admitted that his son, Donald Jr., committed perjury when he repeated the adoption lie in testimony before the United States Congress.

You may recall that Donald Jr. provided the email thread in which he was asked by a family friend to take a meeting with individuals with close ties to the Russian government who wanted to provide him dirt on Hillary Clinton as part of the Russian government’s effort to help his dad get elected.  Don Jr’s email response to the overture was:  ” If it’s what you say it is, I love it.”  Don Jr, Jared Kushner and Paul Manafort took the meeting and, after being outed in the media, put out a false statement dictated by the president that the meeting was about Russian adoptions.  Don Jr. later perjured himself by repeating this lie in testimony before congress.

The president has previously denied all of this.  Until today.  His tweet today brings the conspiracy to light.

The president’s tweeted assertion that accepting dirt on a political opponent from the Russians is “totally legal and done all the time in politics” is patently false.  According to federal law, a candidate can neither accept nor intend to accept anything of value from a foreign entity to help his/her campaign.  It doesn’t have to be money or gold bars. Information is valuable.  Getting dirt on Hillary Clinton would have been an incredibly valuable commodity for the Trump campaign in a very contentious election.  Don Jr. understood the value of compromising information and agreed to take the meeting.  “If it is what you say it is; I love it.”  Don Jr. took that meeting with the intent of getting that valuable information from the Russians.  That Don Jr. brought the president’s closest advisor and the campaign manager to the meeting with him, is evidence of how serious he was about listening to what the Russians had to offer.  Whether he received the information or not; whether he used the information or not…is irrelevant. His intent was clear.  “I love it.”

These are stupid people.  There is no other way to explain the slow-witted activity we are witnessing here.  The level of dullness on display here is beyond the pale.

No doubt the president’s sycophants will out in full-throated defense of the indefensible.  To be clear…anyone who tries to put a positive spin on this inanity is as dense as the perpetrators.

On a more personal note…

I am a father.  As the father of two sons, I cannot imagine what twisted frame of mind would possess a father to put his son in legal jeopardy to save his own ass.  What kind of man does this?
