The Deputy Attorney General had been coopted by the President of the United States to get rid of James Comey. Authoring a letter at the behest of the president only to find it used as an unintended resource. Made to look like a sucker, Rosenstein restored his reputation and exacted revenge in the most effective way possible.
Deputy Attorney General Rod J Rosenstein appointed former FBI Director Robert Mueller as Special Counsel in charge of the investigation into Russia’s interference in the 2016 elections and possible collusion by members of the Trump campaign.
You could hear the collective sigh of relief as news of Mueller’s appointment was broadcast across the country.
By all accounts Robert Mueller is a man of integrity, character and honesty. In other words everything our current president is not. The longest tenured director of the FBI sans Hoover; Mueller is known for his strict adherence to the rule of law and an unwavering commitment to follow the facts no matter where they lead. A former Marine, Mueller led a rifle team in Vietnam where he won a Bronze Star and a Purple Heart. His legal career includes prosecuting some of the largest most high profile cases in American history. In the wake of 9/11 Director Mueller initiated the largest re-organization in the history of the FBI; shifting the agency focus from crime solving to counter intelligence. When the Bush/Cheney administration gave into to panic and fear and began shredding the civil rights of American citizens it was Robert Mueller…and James Comey…who stood up against Bush/Cheney and said: “No.”
Donald Trump has never met a man like Robert Mueller. As former CBS News anchor, Dan Rather put it: “Up until know Trump has controlled the narrative. He has gone after the people who have challenged him. He has been the hunter. No more. Robert Mueller will be the hunter. Donald Trump the hunted.”
Mueller’s appointment is timely. The first item within his prevue will be the breaking news that former National Security Advisor Mike Flynn and his lawyers told the Trump transition team that he was being investigated by the federal government for his lobbying efforts on behalf of the Turkish government. Trump and Transition Team leader Mike Pence knew Flynn was being investigated but still hired him as Trump’s National Security Advisor…and then lied about knowing anything about the investigation.
Clearly Mueller has his work cut out for him. By all accounts he is the right man for the job.
Rod Rosenstein did the right thing. He stood up to the bully. He stood up for the people. He defended the rule of law, the republic and its constitution. Normal order has been restored.
Churchill once said: “The Americans always do the right thing…after they’ve exhausted all the alternatives.”
