“Fake News!” A label frequently used by President Trump to disparage media reports that paint the president in an unfavorable light. Perhaps the label might be more appropriately used to describe the profusion of lies and mis-statements foisted upon the American people by the Trump administration.
Case in point…
The heads of the US Intelligence Agencies appeared before congress to provide their annual assessment of threats to US national security. Their fact based testimony stood in sharp contrast to the narrative put out by the president.
Donald Trump has proclaimed that ISIS is defeated. The Intel Chiefs stated that ISIS remains a terrorist and insurgent threat in Iraq and Syria.
Donald Trump has stated that North Korea no longer poses a nuclear threat. The Intel Chiefs testified that the nuclear capabilities and threat that existed a year ago still exist.
Donald Trump has asserted that the Iranians are continuing to build their nuclear arsenal. The Intel Chiefs stated that Iran continues to be in compliance with joint nuclear deal it reached with the US and our western allies.
Donald Trump has refused to accept that the Russians meddled in the 2016 election. The Intel Chiefs asserted that the Russians not only meddled in our 2016 election they attempted to meddle in the 2018 mid-terms and there is every evidence that they will attempt to meddle in the 2020 elections.
Donald Trump has stated that he has developed a great relationship with Russian President Putin and Chinese President Xi. He has used these relationships as a reason behind his controversial favorable treatment toward the two countries. The Intel Chiefs testified that Russian and China are more aligned than ever before in advancing their global interests; interests diametrically opposed to US foreign policy.
Donald Trump has stated that the flow of immigrants across our southern border poses a national security threat to the country. The Intel Chiefs made no mention of a crisis on our southern boarder.
“Fake News” indeed.
