“Reluctantly I have concluded that President Trump is a serious threat to US national security. He is refusing to protect vital US interests from Russian attacks. It is apparent that he is for some unknown reason under the sway of Mr. Putin.” These are the words of Retired Four Star General, Barry McCaffrey.
Four star generals are few and far between. Those deemed worthy of such an august rank have demonstrated throughout their careers a degree of valor and patriotism not found in most mortal men. They are the best of the best.
Like most military men they do not speak of their time at war and rarely is the occasion when we see them weighing in on the political controversies of our time. And so, when we do hear them offer their consul on the days’ events we would do well to listen. For their opinions are borne not from ideology but from a deep patriotic love of country.
General McCaffrey believes that our president poses a serious threat to our national security. If we can allow ourselves to put partisan politics aside we can clearly see that he is right.
We have incontrovertible proof that the Russians engaged in a criminal conspiracy to interfere in our electoral process, yet the president does nothing.
We have incontrovertible proof that the Russians attempted to hack into our nuclear arsenal, our power grid and key components of our infrastructure, yet the president does nothing.
The Russians assassinated three former citizens on British soil. Rather than supporting our closest ally’s response to this brazen attack, the president does nothing.
The president criticizes, demeans and insults our closeted democratic allies while cozying up to autocrats and despots.
North Korea is on the verge of becoming the world’s most dangerous nuclear power. Russia is meddling in our elections and attacking our infrastructure. Iran continues to sponsor radical Islamic terrorists. We are involved in military conflicts in Iraq, Afghanistan, Syria, Yemen and parts of Africa. Our infrastructure is crumbling, our education system is failing our children, an opioid epidemic has spread throughout the country and gun violence kills tens of thousands of Americans each year.
And where is our president’s focus?
Our president is focused on silencing a porn star, gloating over the firing of the deputy director of the FBI and obsessing over a federal investigation into his family business activities.
Retired Four Star General Barry McCaffrey is a West Point graduate who served combat tours in the Dominican Republic and Vietnam. His service record includes being awarded three Purple Hearts for injuries received in combat, two Silver Stars for Valor and two Distinguished Service Crosses. In 2007 he was inducted into the US Army Ranger Hall of Fame. At the time of his retirement he was the youngest serving general in the Army.
Barry McCaffrey is an American hero and a true patriot. He has spent his life in honorable service to his country.
He believes that the President of the United States poses a serious threat to our national security.
We would do well to listen.
